<image:title>News - Tor Royal restoration from above - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Aerial images taken soon after restoration interventions were completed in spring this year. The large erosion channel running through the site, and eroding peat cutting features, required large amounts of logs and wood to block and ensure water could be held back. This can be seen by the areas of water formed behind the blocks, which will help to raise and stabilise the water table in the degrading peat. The small, shallow, circular pools were made by the process of creating the large blocks, with peat taken from these pools to help create a seal around the wood and ensure effective hydrological restoration.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Before and after: Wooden blocks being created in an erosion gulley at Cranmere by contractors, before being covered in peat and topped with vegetation. Very quickly small pools of water form behind the blocks, with water being held back and helping to raise and stabilise the water table in the peat. This reduces the erosion of the carbon-rich peat, creates habitat for wildlife and encourages the hydrological conditions needed for peat-forming sphagnum mosses to colonise and thrive.</image:caption>

These excavators are what enables us to do what we need to do. They enable us to work effectively at scale through the winter, providing the capability to move and shape the peat and turfs of vegetation to restore the peatland.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Cranmere Photo Update - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Before: An aerial image captured before restoration works began showing just a small area of the extensive degradation and erosion channels forming through the peat. Healthy functioning peat bogs should not look like this. Without action, these gullies continue to grow, and funnel water with dissolved organic carbon, and the peat itself, away. Our work helps to reduce erosion, block up these channels and keep the carbon in the ground.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Construction of the peat and wood block underway Having removed the top vegetation, the team excavated the peat to a depth of approx 1.2m below the surface of the floor. This was done to allow peat pipes and/or archaeological features of interest to be identified and recorded. The peat was then returned to the trench, and compacted with the back of the excavator bucket to disrupt the peat pipes found. Wooden posts were then inserted into the peat down to the bedrock surface along the length of the proposed timber block. Planks were then inserted into the peat below and sides of the “exit point” and attached to the posts. Joins between planks occur on different posts, to increase the strength of the block. Additional planks were then stacked on top, inserted into the peat on the sides, and nailed to the posts, using the tongue and groove on said planks to seal them together. On completion of the timber structure, the block was then finished by covering in a dome of peat taken from nearby borrow pits and re-topped with the turf removed initially.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The SWPP team using the newly created blocks to walk across the Cranmere area. Restoration works are extensive and have to be to have a real impact on the ongoing degradation, however are designed to enable livestock and people to move through the landscape and can provide easier access than when hiking through dense Molinia, erosion gullies and peat pipes. Un-rewetted routes can be accessed to the left or right of this area easily if preferred. Hikers can avoid pools by navigating around uphill or downhill of the pools seen here.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A cross section of peat showing why our work is important. If a healthy area of bog, we would expect to see thick yellow brown layers (waterlogged, little decayed peat) at the surface gradually transitioning to highly compressed ancient black peat deeper down. Instead, we can see a black 30cm layer at the surface indicating that the bog surface is no longer hydrologically active and has oxidised (rotted) and therefore released it's CO2. The ‘peat pipe’ – channel that has formed below the peat - has let air in, rotting the waterlogged peat around it and creating the black ring around the pipe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Tavy Head presented an exciting and challenging project; a vast and isolated site with huge restoration potential. Utilising low-ground pressure machinery; our team worked closely with SWPP to employ a myriad of techniques to work towards acheiving hydrological restoration with all consideration to the historic Dartmoor environment. Dartmoor is a beautiful place to work; whether visibility is 100s of miles on a clear day or 5 metres in the thick fog. However exposure to the elements creates unique challenges. Through two winters of freezing conditions and record rainfall, the commitment and dedication of SWPP officers and our team have been vital to delivering this landmark restoration project.” - Quantock and Exmoor Ltd</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wood stacked up on site ready to be used by local contractors that day. This wood was milled and produced by the Woodland Trust’s restoration programme at Fingle Woods nearby, where the team are gradually removing conifer trees planted in the 1950s and creating a more resilient and thriving habitat for many more woodland species to withstand the changing climate and biodiversity crises. Working in partnership with the Woodland Trust to source this wood, SWPP then uses these planks to create blocks which are then covered in peat to create an impermeable barrier, helping to raise and stabilise the local water table within dried and degrading peat bogs. Jonny, SWPP Restoration Officer, and contractors on site took presenter Joe Crowley through the process of creating a wooden block in an erosion gulley, with water soon pooling behind.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the afternoon, the sun came out and the low winter light caught the contractors and diggers at work nearby blocking erosion channels that channel water away off the peat. SWPP works with several local contractor firms to carry out the peatland restoration work, which takes place between August and April to avoid the ground-nesting bird season. These machines are adapted to work efficiently and effectively on these upland landscapes in nearly all weathers, with tilt-rotator buckets to reduce digger movement, and wide tracks resulting in a ground pressure on the peat that is less than a human exerts per square inch.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Restoring peatlands is key in tackling the climate and ecological crisis.</image:title>
<image:caption>Globally, peatlands store more carbon than all of the world’s forests combined. However, once they are disturbed and dry out, this valuable store begins to release carbon and other warming greenhouse gases. At least 75% of peat in the UK is damaged and releasing emissions. That’s why we’re one of several peatland partnerships across the UK working to find the best ways to restore peatlands, keep carbon stored, support people, benefit wildlife and champion these vital ecosystems.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Working together to find the best ways to make a lasting difference.</image:title>
<image:caption>The South West Peatland Partnership is a collaboration between local and regional government agencies, non-governmental organisations, businesses, landowners, commoners and farmers. We’re working together across the UK’s South West to reduce further degradation to peatlands by raising the water table and restoring the hydrological function of these areas.</image:caption>
