Wonderful water.
Water is key in our works to restore peatlands. It’s all about keeping water up on the moorland,
By blocking man-made ditches, reprofiling areas and encouraging varied vegetation growth, water begins to be held back and re-wet areas of peatland. This in turn benefits widllife, plants and animals that rely on this wet habitat, helps prevent the release of carbon dioxide from peat, reduces degradation of the peat and encurages the formation of more peat.
The benefits are also seen off the peatland, with petland restoration benefitting local watercourses, wildlife and built-up areas.

Storing
Sphagnum can hold up to 10 times its weight in water and pet up to 20 times. Vast amounts of the world’s freshwater resources areheld in functioning peatland.
Waterlogged peatlands also sequester carbon from the atmopsher and store this in the peat.

Peatlands have been dried and used over the years. This has left large areas dried, degraded and prone to washing away. If you’ve ever walked across Dartmoor and felt the ground give way beneath you, you’ve likely seen a peat pipe! These are created as streams of water form below ground, eroding tunnels and tubes that can’t support the ground above them. Rushing off the moors can cause issues downstream with flooding and increased processing. Healthy rewetted peat bogs prevent this, as water is kept in the bog, and not flowing off the moorland in these underground pipes.

Healthy, hydrologically functioning peatlands help improve the quantity and quality of run off, reducing processing costs for our customers and improving the health of rivers and waterways that we all enjoy across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset.
SWW Quote: X% of water that falls on Dartmoor makes its way to the taps of homes and businesses across the south west. Healthy peatlands help sow the flow of water.
